Feature: Female Sexuality

The more I write about female sexuality the more I am realising that there is still a tremendous amount of taboo around female sexual desire. It amazes me and stuns me every time I trip over another gate that is keeping women in a place of uncomfortable sexual endurance rather than a place of delicious sexual pleasure. Feature: Ancient Erotic Love Poetry

When I picture Ancient Egypt, I can’t help but imagine majestic pyramids and magical sunsets across the Nile. It looks idyllic but then I am reminded of some of their traditions, like the gory mummification rituals and the belief that once you died, your heart would be weighed upon a scale and the fate of your soul would be decided: paradise or eternal damnation. A pretty dire picture that makes you think twice before choosing Ancient Egypt as a time-travelling destination. Continue reading Feature: Ancient Erotic Love Poetry

Feature: Monogamy Is Dying

The first time my current boyfriend slept with someone else, I was intrigued.

“What was it like?” I asked. He sighed: “Fine.” I had so many questions: where, who, what did she look like, but he refused to answer any more when I asked about her knickers. “I’m just wondering if they were nice?”

I’m not a hardline monogamist. In my last (monogamous) relationship, I always felt
that if my partner slept with someone else, it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

It seemed stupid to walk out because of a casual shag. We had shared all those adventures and confidences.

Our relationship couldn’t be undone by one act. Continue reading Feature: Monogamy Is Dying

Feature: A Rough Guide To The Clitoris (It comes in all shapes and sizes!)

I recently checked out an amazing art exhibition all about the clitoris, called “CLITERACY.” Now, the clitoris doesn’t usually get a lot of press. It’s usually upstaged by the vagina, which is usually left in the dust by the attention that the penis gets. Where Did The Bush Go?

Female Pubic Hair Nostalgia
Recently, I came across an adult film from the 1970s. I was amazed at the difference between it and modern porn. Some things don’t change much (cheap sets, preposterously thin plots, atrocious acting), but comparing the people was like looking at two different species. Then, everyone had hair, everywhere, and the sex was by far the most genuine part of the whole show. The couples smiled at each other and made silly noises while copulating. Feature: 14 Crazy Amazing Facts About Female Sexuality

In Soho, there is an amazing art exhibition all about the clitoris, called CLITERACY. Now, the clitoris doesn’t usually get a lot of press. It’s usually upstaged by the vagina which is usually left in the dust by the attention that the penis gets! So walking into an art exhibit all about the clitoris was pretty amazing even for me! The artist, Sophia Wallace, in her ongoing mixed media project “exposes the irony of society’s obsession with and ignorance of female sexuality. CLITERACY, 100 Natural Laws (2012) includes a monumental wall of texts which challenge phallocentric biases in science, law, philosophy, politics and the art world. Wallace’s focus on the clitoris and female pleasure serves to question and counteract the history of misinformation regarding women’s bodies and the concomitant oppression therein”. I was completely drawn in. It’s a “must go see”. Continue reading Feature: 14 Crazy Amazing Facts About Female Sexuality

Feature: Get On With It!

Look, I know you men have it difficult. Women are
just about impossible to understand, much less, please!

In a post-feminist society, you never know exactly what
you should be doing. Women are bloody picky, I know we are.

It can be scary, too, when women freak out about
what appears to be benign issues.

And men who do their best to be respectful,
female-positive humans, I salute you, I do.
